I’ve been saying for months that the welterweight showdown between Matt Brown and Carlos Condit has a great chance to be Fight of the Year in 2013. Well, it had a chance before Brown was forced to withdraw due to an injury sustained this past week.

Brown said via twitter, “Thanks for the support guys. I regret to inform all that I am out of the fight with Condit. I herniated 2 discs in my lower back this week.”

The fight scheduled for UFC on Fox 9 has now been scrapped from the card.

Condit released the following statement: “I was greatly disappointed to hear of Matt Brown’s injury. This was a fight that I was looking forward to immensely, and I know it was a fight the fans have been excited to see. When the fight does happen, I promise that the wait will be worth it.Right now I’m going to spend time with my family over the holidays, and hope that Matt heals up quickly so that we can reschedule this fight soon.”

A lightweight matchup between Joe Lauzon and Mac Danzig has been moved up to the main four-fight card on FOX.

In the main event, Demetrious Johnson will defend his flyweight strap against Joseph Benavidez as a -135 ‘chalk.’ The two other fight on the main card pit Urijah Faber vs. Michael McDonald and Chad Mendez vs. Nik Lentz.

In other UFC news, Mark Hunt suffered a broken hand in two places during Friday’s epic battle with Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva that resulted in a draw. Also, a key fight at 170 between Jake Shields and Hector Lombard has been added to the UFC 171 card.
