Oklahoma City’s chances to return to the NBA Finals for a second straight season took a huge hit Friday afternoon when the organization announced that Russell Westbrook has a tear in his meniscus and will need surgery in the next couple of days.

There is no timetable for his return.

Westbrook has never missed a game during his five-year career. During the 2012-2013 regular season, Westbrook averaged 23.4 points, 7.2 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game.

The Lakers’ Metta World Peace suffered a similar injury this season and returned in 12 days. However, that was considered an extremely fast recovery for an injury that is usually 4-6 weeks.

Most books had the Thunder favored by three for Game 3 at Houston before word of Westbrook’s injury broke. Most spots now have the Rockets as one-point favorites.
